Arthur Pennyworth was an English butler and the father of Alfred Pennyworth. Mr. Pennyworth was a member of the Raven Society as part of the Old Guard Battalion that is assigned to take revenge if the organization should fail.
History[]
Nothing much is known about Mr. Pennyworth's history, he has been working for Sir Francis Tewkes for about 20 years.

Clashes with Esme[]
Arthur's relationship with Alfred was initially a cold and strained one. It became even more strained when Alfred revealed his relationship with Esme Winikus, as Arthur did not initially agree that the two were a good match. However, the relationship between the two improved prior to her death.
Following her death, Arthur realized that Alfred truly loved Esme and understood the grief he was feeling. He helped Alfred polish Esme's engagement ring when he saw Alfred struggling, which helped the relationship between the two.
The Old Guard[]
Arthur becomes sick in the latter part of Season One, and it is revealed that he has terminal lung cancer. This does not stop him from attending weekly meetings with the Raven Society, which Mary is aware of, but Alfred is not. Arthur does not reveal his membership, perhaps as he knows how Alfred feels about them.
When Harwood fails to topple the government, Arthur realizes that he — as a member of the Old Guard — must take action to ensure that Harwood's vision is realized. He bids his farewells to his family before leaving for the cabinet dinner in Marianne Faithfull. At the dinner hosted by his employer Sir Francis Tewkes, he plants and arms an explosive, but is confronted by Alfred, who has learned of his membership through his mother. Arthur begs Alfred to leave, however he does not and Alfred ends up shooting him, apparently killing him before the explosives detonate and blow up the dinner.
A hallucination as a ghost[]
In The Heavy Crown, on a kidnapping job Alfie, Bazza, Daveboy set them self outside the house. While waiting that night Alfred is haunted thinking about ghost of him dad. It was a bad dream.
In The Belt and Welt, bombs explode just outside Alfred's home. Mrs Pennyworth did what she could to help. Alfie's more concerned about getting his money to America back. Alfred hallucinates his dead father's ghost, who advises him that someone close to him took the money.
In The Bloody Mary, Alfred hallucinates his dead father's ghost about what he thought about leaving. Arthur Pennyworth tells for once he could agree, getting his self and his mother out was right. Telling Alfred that you can't fight the tides, Isaac Newton proved that, but Alfred was not sure Isaac Newton had to do with it. It was gravity, so Alfred tosses his lighter up to prove he can fight gravity, and the figment was gone.
Raven Union High Council Member[]
Going around the table in The Hangman's Noose it is shown that Mr. Pennyworth is not dead. Arthur Pennyworth is the last to vote. Voting with everyone in favor of the Project Stormcloud weapon.
In Paradise Lost, Salt reminded London of the time left to surrender. After only, Alfred is taken to Salt’s office. As leader, Salt sees Alfred as a man of honor, and offers him the opportunity to join his side. Alfred refuses, but Salt has his father come rolling out in a powered wheelchair to try and persuaded his son to switch sides.
Father and son meet once more. Alfred is surprised to see that his father is still alive, and not hallucinating his father's ghost. Alfred scolds Arthur for his beliefs, his loyalty, and what he did to his mother.
The crew attempts to complete the mission, but are once again captured. The four men are taken to Salt’s chambers, where each has a chance to join the Union. They all decline the offer. Arthur asks Salt to give him a moment of privacy with his son, to try one last time to have him join them. Salt accepts and goes to his rooms to wait. It seems that he is trying to recruit him for the Union, he lowers his voice and asks his son if there is a possibility that his mother will forgive him. Arthur just wants to see his wife again, and Alfred really believes that his parents can reunite, this pushes Arthur to switch sides. He tells Alfred that he has a gun hidden inside his pocket. Alfred takes it and uses it to shoot the soldiers who are holding him and his friends prisoner.
Alfred, Thomas, Lucius, Dave Boy, and Arthur drive away from the Raven Union headquarters with the “Project Stormcloud” weapon finally secured.
In The Lion and Lamb, Alfred takes his father back to their house so he can be reunited with his wife, Mary. However, not all is as it seems.
Arthur seems to side with Alfred and saved them all. It was a trick, but he agreed to "help" his son was to be reunited with his family before the bomb killed everyone in London. Alfred is understandably furious with this revelation, and he takes his anger out on his father. However, thanks to his wife and son, Arthur revealed to Alfred the location of the bomb.
