Martha Kane

Martha Wayne (née Kane) is an American photojournalist and a former member of the No Name League who works for newly appointed Thomas Wayne. She carries out all of her assignments for the league in partner with Alfred Pennyworth, through Pennyworth Security.

Martha's father was a career military officer and she travelled around a lot growing up. At some point in her life her father died in a car crash^[1] and she became a member of the No Name League. Martha completed the US Marine Corps Reserve Training Program at Fort Benning.^[2] She later becomes Thomas Wayne's second.^[3]

Working with Pennyworth[]

Martha first makes an appearance in Martha Kane when she meets with Alfred Pennyworth at The Severed Arms, on the premise of a business deal with Pennyworth Security. Martha asks about Alfred being a driver for her as she needs to transport a man, Ian Thurso, to a safe place given the warrant out for his arrest because he is homosexual. Alfred agrees to work with her, as she says that she doesn't know Thomas Wayne.

Not long after Martha is forced to reveal that she works for the No Name League, a fact that shocks Alfred, who is of the opinion that they should surrender Ian to the Raven Society and save themselves. Martha admits that they cannot surrender to the Raven Society, leading to Pennyworth hatching a plan in return for a £10,000 reward.

Martha and Pennyworth work together again on numerous missions. They work together in Lady Penelope to uncover the name of the new leader of the Raven Society, eventually revealed to be Frances Gaunt. Martha and Pennyworth risk their lives on this mission as Gaunt wishes to make an example of the two to show the rest of the world that she is not weak. The two escape, however.

Relationship with Thomas[]

Thomas becomes Martha's superior not long after she meets with Alfred. The two form an unlikely connection instantly through their work together as members of the No Name League. However, Wayne struggles with having to hide the fact that he is working undercover as a member of the CIA.

Thomas Wayne uses their work relationship in Cilla Black; he takes his sister Patricia Wayne to Martha’s apartment, asking for help looking after her while he is on assignment. Thomas asks Martha to tell his sister that Martha is a former girlfriend of his. Patricia takes Martha to a party at Aleister Crowley’s, to Martha’s distress. Martha fusses about Patricia, asking that they only stay a short while, but Patricia says Martha should live a little. Three days after Martha and Patricia attended the party, Martha returns home to find Thomas waiting for her. Thomas and Martha retrace her steps, finding themselves at the house where the party occurred and Martha blacked out. She tells Thomas she met the Devil, and begs him to get Patricia away from Crowley.

Thomas’s undercover work for the CIA strains the relationship between the two; Martha and Patricia are shocked and horrified when this fact is revealed by Crowley in Julie Christie. Martha eventually finds a way to forgive Thomas, admitting that it does not change anything between the two.

The relationship becomes more complex when Wayne reveals to Martha — who truly believes in the No Name League — that Undine Thwaite had her husband Julian Thwaite killed in order to gain power within the league. This is a disturbing notion for Martha and shatters the faith that she has both in the League and in Wayne. The two eventually grow close again in Marianne Faithfull Wayne tells her he come to get them both on a plane to America, as all seems lost. Not leaving her, when she still feels that can save the League, they team up with Alfred and his friends. When Wayne admits that he has feelings for Martha, culminating in the two kissing and beginning an intimate relationship… until he is shot.

The Heavy Crown Thomas Wayne comes back. Martha is with fellow English Leaguers Boots and Darren. Martha thinks his return means an intimate relationship, but Thomas tells her that back in Gotham city he got engaged to Betsy Van Wick and that he hopes they can stay friends. Martha pretends not to care, but is hurt and angry.

The Hunted Fox Thomas Wayne pays a visit to Martha, and once again asks for her help. Martha was annoyed, thinking he needed a date. He wants her to help him with Patricia, who is currently in a relationship with a notorious fashion designer Jacques Duval. Telling Martha all kinds of shocking tales about the fashion designer involving the Elliot Family. She wanted to know if that was CIA stuff, he answers no, lawyers. Martha tells him, she is already going to the party and that Patricia is the only Wayne she is talking to. After seeing the man and being sick of being called Marsha and Wall Flower, and how deep the relationship is going and how quickly. Then shocking moment when the birthday cake rolls out. When Patricia is proposed to by such a man; it pained her to agree with Thomas Wayne, that the designer is despicable. Together they hatch a scheme to break the two up.

She lures Duval to her apartment, ostensibly to help her with her fashion. When he comes out of the bathroom naked, she beats him up and hogties him, and Thomas brings Patricia over to witness her faithless fiancé’s actions. After Patricia chases the naked Duval into the street. Martha and Thomas celebrate with a drink on the couch. She tells Thomas, she had fun beating the perverted fashion designer up. This eventually leads to the two ending up in bed together.

In London[]

Part of the English League, Martha works closely with Victor Aziz, collecting sensitive information, taking turns working the front line barricade, and taking sentry duties.

In The Heavy Crown Martha has a good lead. With a man trapped in a chair, she points her gun at him. She coerces him to spill information out about a scientific project and its lead scientist. Joining Aziz, she feels bad about who she is becoming. Martha talks to him about it as they wait to talk to Alfred in his club. Going up to his office, she is outraged by how much Alfred is charging for the extraction job. The money could go to the hungry or the war effort in London.

The Burning Bridge Aziz finds her at the front to tell her that Salt was grabbed away after being handed over by Alfred, Bazza and Dave Boy. Martha is forced to tell Aziz when he asks about their friend Thomas Wayne and the CIA but when accused of being hostile because Thomas is engaged, she tries to deny it and claims that it is about principle. Martha claims she would feel the same even if keeping a friendship with the CIA could help their fight in the future. Martha wants to know why Aziz is spying on her. She is informed they were spying on Thomas Wayne, and is embarrassed, because that, of course, makes far more sense.

Alfred comes across Martha Kane as they both are walking around in London. He informs her that he recently saw Thomas Wayne at his nightclub The Delaney. To her astonishment, she learns Wayne has been talking with their known enemy Crowley. Upon hearing that Crowley was behind Potter's death, Martha puts two and two together, and she confronts Thomas. She condemns him for the role he played in this twisted game of politics, slaps him in the face and storms off, leaving Thomas feeling horrible about what has transpired.

Martha feels she can not forgive Thomas for the part he did play in Prime Minister Archbishop Potter's death.

Thomas works all his options in The Rose and Thorn to find a way to get his CIA scientist spy, Lucius Fox, out of Raven territory. He works the angle of the English League and its new prime minister Aziz. Aziz sits down with Thomas Wayne about doing the job and it look like an English League kidnapping. They agree Pennyworth would be good for the job. Martha is in the room for the meeting too. She is still angry with Thomas.

Aziz puts her on the task. Aziz also notices Martha's health and asks her about her throwing up twice that morning. Obviously she is pregnant.

Alfred and Dave Boy join Martha, as they are to use a small diner where the Union takes Fox for a Burger. Martha says they look terrible, and asks about their feeling upset about Bazza’s death, to both guys’ displeasure. Talking while they wait, Martha says she cares about them, and that they are torturing themselves over Bazza and shouldn't. They say it is bad luck to talk about dead comrades at a job. Martha replies they should try to forgive themselves and that is all she is saying. Waiting till she overhears Fox tell the waitress precisely how his cheeseburger should be prepared, Martha holds off making a move in hopes of avoiding bloodshed, having seen a mother with a baby enter earlier. Martha initiates the conversation on their shared nationality, Fox then asks her if she knows a good place to get a good cheeseburger. Alfred and Dave Boy come over; trying to talk like one soldier to another, Alfred uses every argument he can think of to convince the men guarding Fox to avoid violence, but eventually it becomes clear they will have no choice but to open fire. Martha quickly convinces the mother to exit with her baby before the shooting starts, and after they escape with Fox, Martha runs back in for a moment to raise an arm and call out "Long live the League,” so the surviving guards will know whom to blame (rather than the CIA). As Alfred drives them back to London, Martha sits in the back seat with Dr Fox, trying to get info out of the scientist about Project Stormcloud.

Martha delivers Fox to Wayne's office door. Thomas thanks Martha and she answers in a sarcastic tone, "You’re very welcome. At your service." Then she tells Fox, "I'm sure you and this one will get along like a house on fire." After she leaves, it’s clear she has left an impression on Lucius Fox.

Martha has let Patricia stay over after the broken engagement to Jacques Duval. When Martha comes home she finds Patricia painting a naked man. Patricia oddly answers that she never said that she couldn't. The phone rings, and Thomas leaves a message asking Martha to call him. She yells at the machine. Patricia sends the nude man away, so they can talk. She notices Martha's health and says she has not told him. Martha is stunned, Patricia says she knows that Martha is pregnant and knows that Thomas will freak out. Martha refuses when Patricia offers to predict the sex of the baby.

Lucius and Thomas are to leave the country. Thomas calls Martha; Martha knows she needs to talk to him. Patricia notices how odd she acts while on the phone. That night when at last Lucius and Thomas reach Martha's apartment, to tell both women they are to leave too on the plane to America, which would have both her and Patricia safe in the city of Gotham, the next morning. Martha refuses to go. That shocks Patricia into almost tell more then she should.

By The Hangman's Noose the Queen with those of the English League were glad to toast, no more Lord Harwood and London might still win out. Thomas voices his feeling that Salt could not be better, Martha agrees with him. Talks move to inside Aziz's office. Thomas, Martha, and Lucius and Alfred. Aziz asks him what he thought from the meeting. Wondering if they could trust them, Alfred states I trust no one.

Making out, as Martha attempts to unlock her door. They had to talk. Trying to start, she asks to talk about the birds and the bees. Thomas tells her, he has a condom in his wallet. she asks Thomas why didn't use it last time. At last tells him she is now pregnant. Thomas is first freaked, then upset that she didn't get on the plane. A war zone is not safe. Thomas decides they will marry, so his baby will not be born a bastard. Not asking Martha even and it puts them on shaky ground again.

Lucius, Thomas and Martha in Paradise Lost go to Alfred's house to talk to him. Having to face how Alfred's mother feels about Alfred going into danger. They hatch a plan. Having only a day till it will be used on London. Thomas explains as still CIA station Chief, Thomas informs the Union that he has brought back his missing scientist, Lucius Fox. Really use it to break into the Raven Union headquarters and steal the “Project Stormcloud” before that it can be used.

This plan is a suicide mission, and the entire crew treats it as such. That night Thomas and Martha finally admit their real feeling and agree to get married.

Dave Boy, Thomas, and Lucius are locked up in cells, but Alfred is forced to call London. Aziz and Martha are there, Salt reminds them of the time left to surrender. Martha asks Aziz if Thomas and others are alright. Having to sit by, in London only knowing that they are still alive.

Alfred, Thomas, Lucius, Dave Boy, and Arthur drive away from the Raven Union headquarters with the “Project Stormcloud” weapon finally secured. The Lion and Lamb Thinking they saved the city and prevented the Raven Union's plan. Till Gulliver Troy storms in. Dropping the blue thing that was the weapon. As the gas comes out, all of the English League learn it was a trick.

Being given by Salt not enough time for anyone to evacuate but enough time to say final good byes. Thomas and Martha have a wedding right then and there.

6 months later. The news broadcast breaks in on the TV calling for all people to take their post. Martha goes for her gun, having a duty to London to fight. Thomas asks her not to because she is pregnant. Thinking she has a week till due date, Martha starts going into labor. ^[4].

Working for MI5[]

It is 5 years later by the start of Well To Do and Martha now works under Aziz. Works with Dr. Fox in the Science Department. Her daughter Samantha Wayne is looked after by Mrs. Pennyworth whom, is a nanny. So that both her and Thomas are able to work. Most people think she works in the Public Records Office.

In Well To Do, Lucius Fox and Martha Kane are called in to assess the situation and Fox promises to get Jez the help he needs. Alfred, Dave boy and Bet walk closer, Martha congratulates Mr. Pennyworth on his 3rd catch this month. Bet quickly answer, not to think of dropping the price. Martha answers, when the price was set, nobody imagined this many PWEs would emerge.

Talking with Aziz, a dead body was IDed as a CIA man, and yet no one from his government had contacted anyone. Martha realized the time and had to rush to go home.

Getting home from work late. Patrick Wayne arrived for a visit. Thomas hates his father and have not spoken in years. He came to visit for a few days with a lady friend. Coming under the pretense of getting to know his family, and a simply matter he needed their help with.

Having his father in the house was odd, but getting to the real purpose of his visit was hard. Coming to London also on Wayne Enterprises matters. Then because he needs Martha to find a missing scientist.

Coming to London also on Wayne Enterprises matters. The grown-ups had dinner without Samantha. The 4 of them started out having a nice sit-down. His so called friend Virginia asks Thomas if he enjoys being a doctor. Telling them he does, Thomas enjoys helping in a practical way. That it is fulfilling. Patrick answers one day Thomas will have to stop being a saint and come work for him. Patrick asks Martha about her government work. She tells him, her cover job for Public Records Office. A glorified librarian. Patrick answer in a way to make one think he was a chauvinist, stating she must have stamina to work and handle motherhood. Martha answers his, she diverts the questions onto Virginia Devereaux. Virginia answers keeping Patrick happy is a full time job.

Many Clouds The next morning, Thomas and Martha had a straight forward honest conversation, while Samantha left the room. Martha has to go, and Thomas had Sam, because it is Mrs. P's day off. Thomas wants Martha to be upfront about her work. Martha thought he knew. She explains, it is mostly a desk job, yes, she does carry a gun. Nothing is dangerous. Thomas feels she has been lying to him and to Sam. Martha thinks it is complicated.

After over breakfast, Thomas tells his dad, Martha left to work. Talking and playing along as if Thomas knew everything in Martha's life.

Lucius Fox and Martha Kane were having a chat on a London street, about a dead CIA man. Martha brings up, Dr. Fox use to work for the CIA, but Fox reminds her, so did her husband with a high position. Till they reach Henry who greats Miss Kate and Mr. Fox and then unlocks the door to a small green building. The 3 went inside, Henry asks what he can do today? Weapons or Transportation. Martha asks for a cup of tea. Tea might be a code word. Henry left the 2 of them and said he would be outside.

Martha poors a cup for each of them, and tells Fox, she wanted him to look at the CIA man's autopsy report. Also to talk like friends, if anyone might ask about their work together. Fox quickly answers, he does not talk to anyone about any aspect of the work. She explains Thomas. He repeats him self, adding, epically friends. Martha states she didn't explain her work. He called it deceit, and states, he saw her more a woman of strong moral, but it was good to know Martha was human. Martha then started auguring her side of the misunderstanding. Fox switches to talk about the report. The skin contained Bata-santalol. Given off as a gas when fragrant wood is burned. Means hippy, rare, so rich hippy, it is a clue. Martha walking out. Fox turns and walked to the elevator.

By Many Clouds, Martha had put the pieces together as well. Showing up there, trying to talk at the door, she broke in from another door. Asks Sister Susie if she runs the place. Next where everyone else is. To that Sister Susie explains, she sent them all away. Their journey here was done. She felt it time to be moving on.

Showing Sister Susie a photo of the dead agent. She reacted, asking if he was dead. Then lies about knowing him. Martha offers to help. Sister Susie explains, the Americans just showed one day. Claiming to be from the Peace Corps Medical Division, needing test subject, with a new drug that needs testing. Knowing the Peace Core does not do secret drug tests and laughs, they had CIA written all over them. You are all The Man and they paid well.

Outside more were showing up, Alfred and Dave Boy were getting ready to pay another visit. Another car pulled up too. CIA from the short hair and shiny shoes. CIA men got inside the same way which Martha did. Sister Susie knock Martha unconscious with a blow to the head when both women heard the sound of the men inside. 1 man walks into the room, finished Sister Susie off with a kill shot right between the eyes. Was about to kill Martha too, Alfred and Dave Boy shot the CIA men first.

Looking around at Sister Susie's cult again, Alfred, Dave Boy and Martha had learned the truth. Finding the projector, and the Wayne Enterprises logo.

Martha avoids answering as Mrs. P about her bump on her head. Because of that Samantha went out with Mrs. P in Comply Or Die, she plans to meet them in the park later. Thomas had to confront Martha. About the bump on her head and what really her job is about and leading a secret double life. Martha answers, stating that his father is neck deep in trouble. She was shocked Patrick already told him. Martha's thinking was, he wanted his help. Thomas answers, no he wanted her help. Thomas added he told his dad no. They were married and should trust each other.

Martha and Thomas share info. She knows Wayne Enterprises and the CIA are in London testing a drug. Last adds, she will be briefing Aziz on all of this, when he is back from Paris. Thomas fills in, the missing Dr Glubb needs to be found. His father only wants to find him, he thinks his father's done nothing criminally wrong.

Under the MI5 facade on the surface, Lucius visits the people. Gully Troy escapes using Fox to open the elevator for him with the retinal scanner. Martha along with Alfred Pennyworth and Lucius Fox were outside, having found Troy. Martha questions Alfred's class when he looks for a pay raise to face Troy, all because of bring up his love life. Alfred answers her, if he also married a Billionaire, he'd have more class. Martha answer Touché. So Martha lets him give a price and Alfred asks for double, and she answers for Alfred to go get him. make it quick. Alfred confronted her about Thomas coming to him to ask about her job. Also about if his mom was working yesterday.

Martha meets them in the park later. Samantha enjoys as Martha pushes her on the swings. At the same time her Martha and Mrs. P were chatting about lying to Alfred about working yesterday. Mrs. P does confess what she try for fun on her day off. She met a man. Martha answers wow and asks to hear everything, realizes only if she wants to tell. Martha didn't want to pry, though she did want to. States, she knows about having a secret life. Answering the Lonely Hearts ad in the newpaper. Dating again was not what she expected. Lonely Hearts sounded so sad. Martha argues that it is taking action and taking control of ones life. Mrs. P asks Martha not to tell anyone. Telling Martha about the date, meeting at a nice tea room. Good cakes, adequate tea. The man seemed a gentleman till suggests they go to a hotel to have sex.

Getting Samantha's stuff from the bench, Dr. Glubb approached Martha in the park when she was with Samantha and Mrs. P asking if they could talk. She told him not here. That they could meet at The Queen Anne's Revenge on the East End of London in a half an hour.

Dr Glubb wished to sell his talents to Prime Minister Aziz for the right price. Martha wanted proof he was whom he said. He thought no one else would want to be him. Explaining what he did, and how he had planned to sell it on the open market. Till his buyer Sir Arnulf Thistle was taken out of the game. He wanted 5 million a year, secure lab, and protection. Martha agrees to talk to Aziz. Unfortunately, he was followed and had to run out a side door. As he try to run, Martha had a last question. Wanting to know about her Father-in-law, Patrick Wayne. Dr. Glubb answer Wayne is not the one to worry about. Getting to a car and getting away as he was spotted by the CIA men whom found him. Virginia Devereaux was also present in a car outside watching.

Later when Thomas came home, calling if anyone was home, he pours a drink from the bar. Virginia Devereaux was who answers. Really slips something into Thomas' cup. Her agents in their dark suits came in, to work on Thomas. That night, Samantha was all tucked in by Mrs. P as Thomas came home, having brought dinner so that they could have dinner for 2 from Mirabelle's. They sat down to a nice meal and wine, the phone rang. Thomas gets the phone, but is triggered. Getting a knife, Martha was trying to fight back grabbing the cutting board to block and trying to talk Thomas down. Also, the candle stick holder. He gets her to the floor and stabs her. Returning, it was Mrs. P who knocks him out with the candle stick holder in the dining room. Running to the phone calls for an ambulance and the police.

Silver Birch Alfred saves Thomas, they went to confront those responsible. Not going to plan. Patrick then brings up Scorched Earth, Virginia claims it is too late. Alfred warns Aziz who goes and waits in Martha's hospital room. Aziz is in her hospital room waiting for the agents to arrive. At least that part of Alfred's plan went right. The entire circumstance put a strain on Thomas and Martha marriage.

Home again as a family with their and daughter, in Rhyme 'N' Reason next Patricia Wayne came for a visit. Gladys went to answer the door for Martha. She would surprise them with a visit. Being in London mostly for her interest in Francis Foulkes. She wanted to see them and her niece. Patricia had a present for her niece Samantha. Asking if she has pierced ears and then offers to do it was her. Martha refused.

In Don't Push It Martha gets a phone call. Someone taking through something to alter their voice. Some kind of informant, the voice first tells her that Salt is dead. Also about his work and what will become of it. The army confiscated everything. Martha response that is not possible. The voice ends by telling her, there is a file at her door and then hangs up the phone.

Looking at the files and the mention of Level 7 as Mrs. P arrives. Being glad that she could come by. She had to go into work. Ahead of leaving the 2 women have a real sit down about how husbands don't share what they are thinking. Martha calls leave his messages every day, Thomas never calls back. Maybe she and Sam fly to him. Has not because she thinks he would say, if he wanted them to come. Mrs. P explain, they never do. Her husband never said how angry he was. Bring up how hard it was when Mr. P kept secret that he was going to blow up the queen. Mrs. P add, might we have a conversion first. Proving her point, states, men will never tell you how they are feeling. Martha asks, but then you never know what is going on?...What are they thinking...might do? Mrs. P asks what Thomas might have done, Martha brushes it off. Having to leave for work, suggests to go to the zoo.

At parliament, Martha waiting in the Prime minister's office to make Aziz meet with her. He is pressed for time. She confronts him about Salt being dead, why he didn't tell her, the Raven labs, enhanced solders, Level 7 also. Then Aziz insists on knowing how she knows this. Martha states, she is head of MI5's science department, and should have been briefed on this immediately. Admitting to the anonymous call and the file left for her. Aziz wants to find out who leak the file.

At night, Martha left a message for Thomas again. As it seems that he is just sitting in Wayne Manor with a drink. Martha knows how upset he was with he left for Gotham City. Martha starts to sob as she begs him to call and then hangs up the phone. Samantha came downstairs, Martha never tucked herdaughter in. Samantha had fallen asleep she explains, she didn't want to wake her. Samantha asked about her dad and states she misses him, Martha answers she does too, they hug.

In Red Marauder, Patricia came to London, Thomas chose to stay behind after Patrick's funeral. Gladys went to answer the door for Martha. Samantha following behind excited to see Patricia back. Martha asks is Thomas is back too. He had to stay, being up to his neck with Lawyer and Accountants and Wayne board. He try to explain it, Patricia states, she stopped listening after the part that her trust fund.

Patricia explains that she wanted to surprise them. She also can help out while Thomas is away still in Gotham City. Martha asks how she is, being not close, Patricia explains. Martha asks how is Thomas? Patricia thought that Thomas was more up tight then usual. Patricia asks how much Martha and Thomas had spoken. Martha states, they have not spoken. About to leave for work, Patricia asks Martha if she still has a dress she gave her. Martha answers the one she would never ware. Patricia asks to barrow it to a Francis Foulkes event.

Added to the group by Aziz. Soon a van with Lucius Fox, Martha Kane, and Gully Troy came to pick up Alfred and Dave boy. The 5 left to the power plane to stop this newest PWE.

Martha gives Dr. Lucius Fox back the file. As they waited by the van outside of a power plant. Realizing it had to be him who leaked her about Level 7 but he needed her to help. Fox thinks that he can not. Or else MI5 will fire him, and who will protect the PWE in Level 6 from being used.

Martha came home, she was greeted by Sam. Concerned by the perfume and makeup, but thanks Patricia for the help. Later, the phone at home rang. Fox calls from Level -6, everyone is gone. Having been taken. He calls Martha to tell her, she was right, it is his responsibility.

At the beginning of Rag Trade, Thomas at last came home. Being under the impression that Samantha was out with Mrs. P for that day. Martha and Thomas start to have a long talk.

A little later, Mrs. P walk in. Being at the Wayne's house to pick up Samantha, but they had thought she came and had left a half hour ago.
