Mary Pennyworth is the wife of Arthur Pennyworth and the mother of Alfred Pennyworth.

History[]

Throughout Pennyworth Series[]

When Alfred returns from the war, she supports his dream to pursue Pennyworth Security despite Arthur's initial dismay, she encourages him to pursue his dream but worries about his safety.

When Alfred meets and proposes to Esme Winikus, Mary again supports Alfred and welcomes Esme into their house despite Arthur not believing Esme to be worthy of his son. When Esme is murdered in Lady Penelope, Mary shares and understands her son's grief as she too shares some part of it.

Arthur's Cancer[]

Mary is bereft when she finds out about Arthur's cancer and encourages him to tell Alfred, however he declines, citing that it is his secret to tell, not hers. This saddens her, but she initially respects his decision. However when Alfred wishes to engage in dangerous business with Inspector Aziz, she reveals the secret in a fit of despair, pleading for Alfred to stay safe. She later reveals the information that Artur is a member of the Raven Society, which shocks Alfred.

In London[]

The Belt and Welt bombs explode just outside their home. Mary Pennyworth tended to a young girl who was hurt in the blast.

The Burning Bridge Mrs. Pennyworth has been kidnapped. Bazza answers the phone She reads Alfred a letter, demanding $20,000 and that they know that Penyworth and his friends do at last have the money. Come alone in 1 hour or she is dead.

Alfred and his friends outsmart the goons and find the trailer which she was tied up in. Aziz and his officers arrive during this exchange, guns blazing, and in the process allow the kidnappers to escape with Alfred’s money. Almost shoot Alfred or Mrs. Pennyworth dead.

A funeral is held for Bazza at the start of The Hunted Fox, Mrs. Pennyworth was there with Daveboy and Sandra too.

The Bleeding Heart she confronts her son when she sees the morning paper. Being sure he was involved with the death as the robbery at the wrestling match. Being so upset as he lies to her face. She is angrier when he tells the truth even when she wanted to know. She smacks him across the face and yells for him to get out.

Willing to leave for America with her son in The Bloody Mary. Mary Pennyworth sat with Dave boy, and Mrs. Troy, waiting, expecting to be on that plane. Till suddenly a feeling stopped Alfred. As Mrs Pennyworth was so thankful not to be leaving.

The Hangman's Noose Alfred and Dave Boy talk, Mrs. Pennyworth feels she can't trust her son. Does not like his whispering. Dave Boy was watching over Mrs. P so she would not be alone. She had a feeling something was not right about going to Troy. Dave Boy and Mrs. P then track Alfred down, Finding Rita at Troy's house, they beat the info out of her. While Troy expects his opponent to finish him off, Alfred decides to spare his life and leaves him in the forest. Troy left instruction for Monty, if Alfred were to win and come back to the vehicle alive. Even if he lost, he could still win. Alfred was bleeding out, too weak to fight. Dave Boy and Mary then track Alfred down and save him, and at the very moment.

Lucius, Thomas and Martha in Paradise Lost went to Alfred's house to talk to him. Having to face how Alfred's mother feels about Alfred going into danger. They hatch a plan. Having only a day till it will be used on London. Thomas explains as still CIA station Chief, Thomas informs the Union that he has brought back his missing scientist, Lucius Fox. Really use it to break into the Raven Union headquarters and steal the “Project Stormcloud” before that it can be used. Mrs. Pennyworth still feels strongly again it.

Alfred is surprised to see that his father is still alive, and not hallucinates his father's ghost. Arthur lowers his voice and asks his son if there is a possibility that his mother will forgive him. Arthur just wants to see his wife again, and Alfred really believes that his parents can reunite, and this pushes Arthur to switch sides. Alfred, Thomas, Lucius, Dave Boy, and Arthur drive away from the Raven Union headquarters with the “Project Stormcloud” weapon finally secured. The Lion and Lamb Alfred takes his father back to their house so he can be reunited with his wife, Mary. However, not all is as it seems.

Mrs. Pennyworth answers the door, Troy came looking for Alfred. She told him he is not home and also kindly states that he could be in a hospital and not running around bleeding out searching for her son. Alfred and Dave Boy finally make it back to the Pennyworth home. She warns her son, troy came but Alfred told her to sit down. Not being sure what could be worse news then the man who try to murder him. Alfred has good news. Oddly she thinks some girl is pregnant. Alfred told her, he found dad's body and he is alive. Puts her into shock. Not believing it, when she stood and turned and heard Mr. Pennyworth's voice, she drops the kettle and faints.

Alfred's father Mr. Pennyworth seems to side with Alfred and saved them all. He agreed to "help" his son only to be reunited with his family before the bomb killed everyone in London. Mrs. Pennyworth gets her husband whom she loves still as much as he loves her, to tell them the truth. Alfred is understandably furious with this revelation, and he takes his anger out on his father. However, thanks to his wife and son, he revealing to Alfred the location of the bomb.





6 months later.... Mrs. Pennyworth is still living at home in London as the city is under attack.

A Nanny[]

It has been 5 years. Her and Alfred still are at home living in the house. In Well To Do One morning, Mary looks at the new paper, thinking of calling. Alfred came down stair in the morning, with a random girl, from that night, when the girl from that past night left, his mom questions when he will find a nice one. Tests if he even knew the girl's name.

Mary Pennyworth soon after left for work. Working for the Waynes as their daughter's nanny. Thomas, Martha, and Samantha greeted her as Mrs. P, she was there and Thomas and Martha both left for work. By the evening Mrs. P was with Samantha as she was eatting when Martha came home. Having gotten to meet the Wayne's unexpected house guests.

Dialing and reaching some one the following morning. She states she is calling in response to his ad. Ahead of even giving her name, she hears Alfred coming and behaves like it is sales man and hangs up.

Alfred sat down to Breakfast with his mom. Mary asks when is he going to settle down. He needs children. Not sure what happens, Jessica Thistle shows up at the Pennyworth's house's front door.

Alfie comes back home after being questioned by the police, at the start of Many Clouds. He told his mom, it was nothing. Mary Pennyworth answers, a murderess shows up at our door, covered in blood is not nothing. Being dressed up Alfred question why she's all glammed up and in her good hat. Mary try to change the conversation back to Thistle, asking Alfie, if she didn't do it, who did? Alfred answers, don't know. Switched the talk back. Noticing, he asks his about wearing a carnation flower pin to work? Mary lies again, telling him that Samantha picked them from her garden, Sam asked Mary to wear one. Mary tells her son clearly, it is her hat and she has got the right to wear it. He should stick to his murder investigation instead of investigating her.

Thomas and Sam went to the Pennyworth family's house in Many Clouds because it is Mrs. P's day off and only found Alfred home. Sam looked for Mrs. P, only Alfred thought she left for work. That visit confirmed to Alfred she lied about what she planned for the day.

That morning in Comply Or Die Mrs. P came. Greeting Sam as her shiny button. The 2 of them went out. Martha was to meet them in the park later. Talking but went getting ready to leave, Mrs. P took Samantha home. Martha had to run, due to work. As a man came to make contact.

That night, Samantha was all tucked in by Mrs. P as Thomas came home. Having brought dinner so that they could have dinner for 2 from Mirabelle's. Mrs. P seems to leave for the evening. They sat down to a nice meal and wine, the phone rang. Sandra's song Candlesticks and Caravans plays, as a trigger. Getting a knife, Martha was trying to fight back, stabs her. Thankfully it was Mrs. P who returns and knocks him out with the candle stick holder in the dining room. Running to the phone calls for an ambulance and the police. She saved everybody.

By the start of Silver Birch, Samantha was safe and staying at the Pennyworth house with Mrs. P till things were solved.

In Don't Push It, Martha was looking at the files of Level 7 as Mrs. P arrives. Rushing over, because Martha needed to leave for work erlyer then normal. Ahead of leaving the 2 women have a real sit down about how husbands don't share what they are thinking. Martha calls, leave him messages every day, Thomas never calls back. Maybe she and Sam fly to him. Has not because she thinks he would say, if he wanted them to come. Mrs. P explain, they never do. Her husband never said how angry he was. Bring up how hard it was when Mr. P kept secret that he was going to blow up The Queen. Mrs. P add, might we have a conversion first. Proving her point, states, men will never tell you how they are feeling. Martha asks, but then you never know what is going on?...What are they thinking...might do? Mrs. P asks what Thomas might have done, Martha brushes it off. Having to leave for work, suggests to go to the zoo.

In Red Marauder The lights had been flickering all day, Mary sat down to breakfast with Alfred and Roger. Upset that Alfred was moping, but Alfred answers, he is having breakfast. She states he had been all of last week, like someone died. Telling her son, she was not right for him. Wanting Alfred to find a nice girl, and not a rebel leader. Gallivanting around and getting into all sorts of fights. Continues to tell Alfred, it is not right, a single man of his age. Living at home, with his mom. Alfred asks his mom, if she is kicking him out. She answers, of cause not. Maybe she should, to give him a push in the right direction. Then the phone rang. She went to get it. Conforming to the person on the line, who she is. Alfred is here at home. If they wanted to speak to him. Moments later she came back to the table with the messages, that was the Prime Minister's office. They want to see him. She then questions Alfred, if this could be about his trip to Scotland?

Rag Trade Thomas Wayne came home, back to London. It seems like Mrs. P arrived for work at the Wayne's house. She offers her deepest condolences to him, for his loss. A half hour later, that morning Mrs. P arrives at the Wayne's house. Being sorry, she is late. Seeing him back tells Thomas Wayne, she was so sorry to hear about his father. Thomas asks Mrs. P where's Sam? Martha states, she left with Sam a half hour ago, and Mrs P states she didn't and asks them what is the matter? What's wrong?

Martha and Thomas start questioning Mary Pennyworth. Thomas lists symptoms, she answers that she is not senile. Martha realized her coat was different. About to call the police, the house phone rings. On the line was the woman who has Sam. Thomas charged out the door, Mrs. P could only ask why someone would do this. Martha calls up Alfred for help.

Thomas and Martha at last got info as to their daughter's safety. Alfred went along too, to Hyde Park. Alfred asks his mom to stay at the Wayne house, incase the woman calls again. Mary hugs her son and begs him to bring Sam back.

Tied up to a chair, she had Samantha. After it was dark Alfred comes to, chained up in the basement of the Wayne's house. Mrs. Pennyworth was glad to see Alfred finally awake. Alfred starts trying to cheer Samantha up with a story, telling the Lion and the Mouse. Telling about what someone who thinks they are small can still do to help. Alfred tells Samantha, like mouse of her hair-pin. The man standing guard kicks Alfred. Samantha ran over to stop the man and hug Alfred. Also to slip her hair-pin to him. The guard put her back on the floor by Mrs. Pennyworth's chair. Alfred warns the guard, if he hits a little girl, Alfred will kill him.

Once everyone was safe, she stood outside with Alfred off to the side. Alfred tells her, she is going to be a grandma. Jokes what Roger will think, dating a granny. Alfred also tells her, he asked her to marry him, to do the right thing. Mrs. Pennyworth answer, he didn't ask like that? She explains to Alfred, if he wants marriage and children it is his job to make her see that side of him.

After a night like that, everyone wanted to rest at the start of Highland Wedding. Gladys brought out the tea. No one wanted. Sadly then the phone rang. The call was breaking up, but they were able to tell it is was [[Lucius Fox on the line. He needed help. Martha and Alfred left for Level 7 faced off with General Thursday. Lucky, no one had the tea or any milk, Mrs. P took Samantha upstairs.

Everyone was going crazy. As half of the city were under the effects of Lullaby. So they come up with a plan. Everyone would meet at The Queen Anne's Revenge. Martha took off running to save her family. Only Gladys had the tea, they subdued her, Samantha explains Mrs. P sat on her.

Dating again[]

In Many Clouds Mrs P. answers an advertisement in the papers seeking companionship, on her day off from her nanny job. Thomas and Sam went to the Pennyworth family's house. Sam looked for Mrs. P, her dad try to call her back as she ran in. Only Alfred thought she left for work. That was a lie.

Mrs. Mary Pennyworth was waiting at the restaurant at a table. She was about to leave, a man came to the table. Being, mature companion, walks through Vicky Park, chats over tea. Mary starts to answer, she realized... the man Frederick, interrupts. Tell her how he jumped ship last time, attack of nerves. He pretending he had to feed his dog, but does not had a dog. After 1 cup of tea, if she wanted, she could leave to feed her dog.

Frederick entertains her all through high-tea. He was glad that she chose to stay. He then comments on her wedding ring. Mary answers, five years since Mr. P passed, she still can't take it off. He wonders if she's been alone. Mary answer, she has her son Alfie who lives at home. Mary starts to tell the story about Esme, that Alfie was to get married once but... Mary pauses and stops her self. She picks not to tell how Esme died. Only telling that Alfie might still be holding a touch for her. Completely unexpected to Mary, Frederick tells how glad he was she had and would not need the ring he brought. Wearing wedding bands makes it simpler at the hotel. He explains, in his ad he states Carpe diem, Latin for Seize the day. She answers, she thought it had to do with fish on Friday. Frederick asks her to again. Mary storms out insulted when the man suggests they go to a hotel to have sex. Frederick follows all the way out to the street, she told him to stay away or her Alfie will put his head on a pike.

In Comply Or Die, Martha meets them in the park later. Samantha enjoys as Martha pushes her on the swings. At the same time her Martha and Mrs. P were chatting about lying to Alfred about working yesterday. Mrs. P does confess what she try for fun on her day off. She met a man. Martha answers wow and asks to hear everything, realizes only if she wants to tell. Martha didn't want to pry, though she did want to. States, she knows about having a secret life. Answering the Lonely Hearts ad in the paper. Dating again was not what she expected. Lonely Hearts sounded so sad. Martha agues that it is taking action and taking control of ones life. Mrs. P asks Martha not to tell anyone. Telling Martha about the date, meeting at a nice tea room. Good cakes, adequate tea. The man seemed a gentleman till suggests carpe diem. Really meaning they go to a hotel to have sex.

In Silver Birch came the day Roger Hammond planned to meet. Divorcé, who enjoys bird watching, and owns a Yorkshire Terrier. Mary Pennyworth tells him she not doing Lonely Hearts any more. Full of perverts. She ment to cancel. Roger had come on a long trip to get there. As Samantha came to the door, he thought she was Mary's daughter. Mary does let him in. Sitting down to tea, Mary talks to him about meeting a nice man and going dancing. He does not dance. Then Roger tells how his wife left him, she ran off with Clive Vickery of Good Day Britain. Roger found it embarrassing. Mary pointed out a photo of her Arthur. Roger remembers his image, from the incident. Remembering, he killed the Prime Minister and almost The Queen. Mary answers, he got mix up in it but was not all bad. Mary jokes, she never trusted Vickery, his eyes were too close together.

Then much later that day, in the evening, Roger and Mary were about to kiss. There was a sound. She took the gun. Taking a position at the arch between the Living room and Dining room. Roger freaked a little. It was only Alfie with Thomas. As the conversation got weirder, Roger said he had better go and went for the door.

Alfred comments to his mom, she looks nice, towards the start of Rhyme 'N' Reason. Meeting Roger, Mary Pennyworth didn't think her son should ask where she was going. He pointed out she asks each time he does go out, and also question if that was the bloke who ran last month. She points out, most people are not use to Alfred's life. Alfred points out, it was wrong of Roger to make her wait so long. She points out to her son, he didn't ring her, she rang him on the phone.

Mary and Roger had their next date in a park. Walking and talking. Roger admits he still says our and we alot. Mary points out, even after 5 years, she still talks to her deceased husband's photograph. Roger tells, when his wife ran off, he wanted to say it was no one's fault. His ex-wife wanted more out of life, and he didn't. Now, he does want more. Asks Mary to give him another chance. She jokes, he's not up for a more interesting life. Nearby an accordion player, she asks him to dance.

In Hedgehunter she had the courage after a month to call back the man she met named Roger. Then Alfred came home later, she had been with Roger in the house. As he looked for his gun that she keeps hiding in strange places. Roger came into the room. Alfred is a little stunned at first. Then confronts Roger on why he never called.

In Red Marauder The lights had been flickering all day, Mary and Roger are happy together. Sitting down to breakfast with Alfred. She thought that Alfred was moping, Alfred had been all of last week. Not calling miss Zahra Khin by name, thinks the girl was not right. Roger added, there are plenty of fish in the sea for a handsome man like Alfred. When she went to answer the phone, Roger even was close enough he told Alfred, he try taking to Mary. A man needs time.

In Highland Wedding, when Roger was concerned for Mary and didn't find her at home. He went looking around London, walks into the bar holding his Terrier in his arms. Asking Alfred if she was there. Mary and Roger stood together in each other's arms, while Alfred's wedding to Sandra. Interrupted right at the moment Alfred was about to say I Do.
