The Burning Bridge is the second episode of the second season of Pennyworth and the twelfth episode of the series overall. It aired on Epix on December 20, 2020.

Synopsis[]

Alfred’s plans for his departure to America are put on hold when someone close to him is put in danger. Thomas enlists the help of an old foe, Aleister Crowley.

Plot[]

Aziz convinces Martha to put aside her petty jealousies for the good of her country and convince Thomas Wayne and the CIA to help fight the wave of fascism sweeping across their country, courtesy of the Raven Union.

Elsewhere, Katie Browning is still being held captive by the throat-slitting charmer Bet Sykes. She tries in vain to get a hold of Lord Harwood, but fails to do so. Eventually she tries to call her sister, Peggy Sykes, but the operator tells her that London is under siege and thus the call cannot be put through at this time. Whereas, Alfred and the boys celebrate getting enough money to move to America. All while he rejects The Queen’s continuous calls to get him back into her bed.

At Raven Union headquarters, Lord James Harwood and Frances welcome Colonel Salt back, who updates them on the latest Project Stormcloud tests. Frances thinks the chemical weapons experiment is wrong, and Harwood promises to put a stop to it, even if he believes in it himself. Harwood’s reasoning is that chemical weapons are more effective than bombs simply because they don’t damage property.

Alfred is having a tough time in his personal life, whether it’s his day-drinking mom or telling the truth about his upcoming departure to his girlfriend Sandra. Then Thomas Wayne shows up at his club, who at the request of his superiors is tasked to recruit old foe Aleister Crowley to do a job for him. Mr. Crowley is to remove some unspecified public figure from his position. Crowley accepts, but in return, requires a kiss from Thomas Wayne to seal the deal.

In a secret council meeting, Aziz tries to get the Prime Minister to help with the growing Raven Union threat, but he is unmoved by his pleas.

Alfred continues to struggle with telling Sandra that he’s leaving. But things get further complicated when he finds out that his Mom has been taken. The kidnappers tell him where to meet to exchange all of his money for her life. He gets the drop on two of the thugs involved, who reveal a man named Mr. X is running the show, but they have no idea who he is because they’re just hired goons.

Aziz and his officers arrive during this exchange, guns blazing, and in the process allow the kidnappers to escape with Alfred’s money. In the end, Alfred’s mom is safe, but Aziz, thinking Alfred is playing them, has crushed the hope of escaping to America that Alfred and his mates had.

Crowley enters a church looking for salvation only to find the Prime Minister, who is his apparent target. Crowley offers to take him on a journey to explore the depths of his imagination.
